Pre-Ballet
Ages 5 to 8
Pre-Ballet introduces the student to the formal structure of a classical ballet class without requiring the total outward rotation of the hip joint. Elementary vocabulary is introduced, concepts of alignment, the positions of the feet and arms, simple stretches, and movements that teach transference of weight, balance, use of space, large and fine motor coordination and jumps. The class also includes a healthy dose of creative elements so that the student doesn’t lose the natural ability to move freely in space and express his/her feelings through dance. Over the course of the year, students become familiar with the structure of a dance class beginning with the barre, progressing through center work and allegro. Class finishes with ‘free dance’ which allows the students to create their own movements and costumes using ribbons, scarves, fans, baskets and hats.
